THE AI BOTTLENECK NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT

As artificial intelligence accelerates, investors are beginning to realize that the next fortunes may be built not by the software everyone sees, but by the photonic infrastructure quietly powering it.

The AI race is often measured in models, chips, and trillion-dollar market capitalizations. Yet beneath every breakthrough lies a less visible challenge. As processors become faster, the movement of data between them is becoming the industry’s greatest constraint.


Copper, the workhorse of modern computing, is approaching its practical limits. It consumes more power, generates more heat, and struggles to keep pace with the enormous bandwidth required by next-generation AI systems. The solution increasingly points to light.


That shift has put a spotlight on companies developing photonic technologies, where information is transmitted using light instead of electrical signals. Among them is POET Technologies, whose Optical Interposer platform integrates electronic and photonic components onto a single chip, reducing power consumption while increasing speed and manufacturing efficiency. The company’s technology is designed for the optical engines that connect AI processors inside hyperscale data centers, where every microsecond and every watt matter.


For investors, this is more than a technology story. It is an infrastructure story.


Every major AI platform depends on moving staggering amounts of information between processors. As those clusters grow from thousands of chips to hundreds of thousands, the network connecting them becomes just as important as the processors themselves. The companies solving that bottleneck are positioning themselves within one of the fastest-growing segments of AI investment.


That opportunity has attracted significant capital. POET secured hundreds of millions of dollars in financing during 2026 to expand manufacturing capacity and support commercial production as demand for AI optical networking accelerates. The company says it expects production to ramp during the second half of the year while scaling toward high-volume manufacturing.


Of course, opportunity rarely comes without risk. Emerging technology companies often carry elevated valuations, execution risk, and intense competition from larger semiconductor players. Success will depend not only on technological innovation but also on the ability to manufacture at scale, win commercial contracts, and deliver consistently in a rapidly evolving market.


History suggests that every technology revolution creates winners beyond the household names. During the internet boom, it wasn’t only browser companies that prospered. Fiber-optic providers, semiconductor manufacturers, and networking firms became indispensable. AI appears to be following a similar path.


For sophisticated investors, the question is no longer whether artificial intelligence will reshape the global economy. It is where the most durable value will ultimately be created.


Sometimes the greatest fortunes are built by the companies no one notices.


Not the ones writing the algorithms.


The ones making sure the data can travel at the speed of light.
