The finest collections aren't always destined for a display cabinet. Occasionally, they belong in a crystal glass.

The Dalmore's fourth and final Cask Curation release, The Madeira Wine Cask Edition, brings together three exceptional single malt whiskies aged 30, 34 and 45 years, each finished in rare Madeira wine casks from Blandy's historic wine lodge in Funchal.

The result is a fascinating progression of flavors. Terrantez lends the 30-year-old notes of stone fruit and toasted walnuts, while Bual brings Seville orange, peach and honey to the 34-year-old. The 45-year-old, finished in Malvasia, delivers a sumptuous finale of golden syrup, chocolate orange and crystallised ginger.

Only 150 sets will exist worldwide, making this as much an acquisition for the discerning collector as an invitation to indulge.

Of course, the greatest dilemma may be deciding whether to open the bottles or simply admire them.
