Interior designer Sarah Akbary was tasked with transforming a longtime family residence in Calabasas into a sophisticated, functional home for a new generation. Thirty-five years after her client first moved in, Sarah reimagined the house from the ground up—reconfiguring the floor plan, updating every finish, and balancing the comforts of memory with the expectations of modern living. The result is a timeless, light-filled retreat that feels as personal as it is elevated.

The design team began by addressing the architecture. Every window and door was replaced to enhance natural light and improve energy efficiency. Ceilings were raised to increase volume, while wide-plank hardwood flooring throughout adds continuity and warmth. The home’s original layout, segmented and dated, was revised to support how the family lives today—with spaces that flow easily from one to the next and accommodate both large gatherings and quiet routines.

One of the most significant layout changes was the reallocation of the formal living and dining rooms. The unused living room was converted into a dramatic new dining area, complete with a custom table sized for hosting extended family. The former dining space now contains a suite of practical additions, including a butler’s pantry, kitchen pantry, powder room, and a custom wine cellar. The reconfiguration maximizes square footage without adding new footprint—an efficient, thoughtful use of space.

In the kitchen, Sarah focused on improving both function and visual clarity. The cooktop was moved from the island to the back wall, allowing the island to serve as a true prep and gathering space. An antique mirror backsplash was added behind the cooktop, reflecting light and views while keeping the chef connected to the rest of the room. High-end Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, custom cabinetry, and neutral stone surfaces create a durable and classic foundation that will age gracefully over time.

The family room was opened up to the outdoors with large bifold doors, improving circulation and expanding the sense of openness. A custom bar was added for entertaining, and the fireplace was redesigned to better anchor the space. Adjacent to the kitchen, the laundry room was reconfigured for greater efficiency, now featuring ample storage, a built-in sink, and high-function finishes.

The staircase, once purely utilitarian, was upgraded with solid wood treads and a custom iron railing, creating a subtle architectural focal point. Upstairs, the primary suite received a full renovation. Ceilings were raised, and the layout was improved to include a large walk-in closet, private water closet, and spa-style steam shower. Fixtures from Waterworks and a soft, neutral palette give the room a calm and composed atmosphere.

One of the home’s most expressive moments is the powder room—proof that even the smallest spaces can carry the greatest impact. Wrapped in Gucci’s Heron wallpaper in a saturated rose tone, the room makes a confident design statement that balances boldness with elegance. The custom vanity, carved entirely from pink onyx, is sculptural and quietly luminous, paired with wall-mounted brass fixtures that offer warmth and contrast. A curved antique gold mirror adds a classical note, while subtle elements like a hand towel and stoneware vase soften the room’s presentation. “We wanted one jewel-box moment in the house,” says Sarah. “It’s fun and personal, but still refined.”

This was not a cosmetic update. Every decision was made with long-term usability, quality, and livability in mind. Sarah’s experience and personal connection to the home helped guide a renovation that respects its history while preparing it for the future.
