MIZU is not conceived as furniture in the conventional sense, but as a sculptural object shaped by movement, material, and patience. Designed by Eberhard Mitterrutzner, the monumental office desk belongs to the Nami series, a body of work inspired by the fluid curvature of wood shavings and the rhythmic forms found in nature.
Each MIZU desk is bent three-dimensionally from ten continuous layers of wood, formed from more than 26 feet of uninterrupted sheet material. The process is executed entirely by hand and without joints, a technical and physical feat that places the piece at the intersection of design, sculpture, and craftsmanship. The top layer is finished in exclusive Canaletto walnut, selected for its depth, warmth, and uninterrupted grain across the desk’s sweeping surface.
Scale is central to MIZU’s presence. Measuring approximately 13.1 feet in length, 6.9 feet in width, and 2.5 feet in height, and weighing around 990 pounds, the desk occupies space with quiet authority. Its form unfolds like a frozen wave, solid yet dynamic, suggesting motion while remaining grounded. The result is an object that commands attention without excess, balancing expressive form with structural discipline.

Despite its sculptural nature, MIZU is fully functional. Integrated seamlessly into the flowing geometry are a solid wood drawer, wireless phone charging, and concealed power and USB sockets. These contemporary features are intentionally discreet, allowing technology to support use without interrupting the desk’s visual continuity. MIZU, along with companion pieces UMI and KAWA, was conceived to be used as much as admired.
The desk is particularly suited to spaces where distinction and refinement are essential, including residential lofts, executive offices, corporate headquarters, and private villas. Its presence signals authorship rather than productivity alone, positioning work as a considered and aesthetic act.

In 2023, MIZU was awarded the Bavarian State Prize, recognizing both its technical innovation and its contribution to contemporary collectible design. As Mitterrutzner has observed, “In nature we find the most beautiful forms. We can feel animated by them while they help us develop objects that have a natural grace.” MIZU embodies this philosophy with clarity and restraint.
Priced at €39,820 (excl. VAT), MIZU stands as a rare example of functional sculpture, where time, skill, and material converge into a singular object of lasting presence.
