At Lana Residences in Dubai, Boobrook’s Noir Matière transforms a penthouse into a study of shadow, materiality, and atmosphere, where darkness becomes as essential to the architecture as light itself.

Dubai rarely whispers.
Its skyline flashes, glitters, and performs, each tower competing for attention against the desert sky. Yet high above the city at Lana Residences, Dorchester Collection, Boobrook has designed a penthouse that seems determined to do the opposite.
The first impression is not of luxury, but of shadow.
Sunlight slips through floor-to-ceiling blinds and fractures into precise bands that stretch across polished concrete floors, charcoal walls, and pale upholstered seating. As the day progresses, those lines migrate through the residence like a slowly unfolding installation, transforming surfaces that might otherwise appear severe into something unexpectedly dynamic. The apartment feels less decorated than choreographed, with light acting as both performer and architect.
This is the premise behind Noir Matière, a private residence designed by Benjamin and Natacha Bouioukliev, founders of Boobrook. Rather than embracing the bright openness often associated with contemporary penthouse living, the designers have created a world of deliberate contrast. Darkness is not something to be overcome here. It is cultivated, shaped, and used as carefully as any material finish.
The effect is striking. Standing in the double-height living room, one becomes acutely aware of scale. Towering concrete surfaces rise toward oversized pendant fixtures suspended overhead like glowing lanterns. Deep black ceilings seem to dissolve into shadow, making the room feel even taller. Yet despite its monumental proportions, the space never feels cold. Warm timber volumes and low-slung furnishings ground the architecture, introducing a sense of comfort that softens the rigor of the surrounding structure.
What makes the residence memorable is its refusal to reveal itself all at once. Certain corners remain intentionally dim. Hallways emerge gradually from darkness. Reflections appear unexpectedly on stone surfaces before disappearing again as the light shifts. The apartment rewards observation. It asks occupants to slow down.
That sense of restraint extends to the material palette. Concrete, blackened oak, oxidized steel, textured plaster, and dark stone dominate the interior, but none are employed for dramatic effect. Instead, they serve as a backdrop for changing conditions of light. During the afternoon, sunlight traces the grain of timber panels and catches the subtle texture of plaster walls. By evening, concealed illumination takes over, revealing entirely different qualities within the same materials. Surfaces that felt austere during the day begin to glow with warmth.
The result feels almost cinematic. One could imagine scenes unfolding here at different hours, each producing an entirely different mood. Morning sharpens edges and contrasts. Afternoon softens them. At dusk, as the city begins to sparkle beyond the glass, the apartment retreats further into itself, becoming intimate and contemplative.
This relationship between interior and exterior may be the project’s greatest achievement. The views are extraordinary, yet they are never allowed to dominate. Dubai remains present as a distant backdrop rather than the main event. The penthouse functions instead as a refuge from the city below, offering stillness where one expects stimulation and calm where one anticipates spectacle.
In many luxury residences, abundance becomes the defining characteristic. More glass. More finishes. More statement pieces. Noir Matière takes a different path. Its power comes from editing rather than accumulation, from understanding that atmosphere is often created not by what is added, but by what is intentionally withheld.
In a city celebrated for brilliance, Boobrook has created something rarer: a home that finds its identity in shadow.
