High above the coastline of the French Riviera, a refined pied-à-terre in Cannes has been quietly reimagined as a serene coastal retreat. Designed by Juliette Byrne, the residence reflects an approach rooted in restraint, balance, and a deep sensitivity to place, capturing the essence of Riviera living without relying on overt gesture.
Set within an 18th-century classical hillside building overlooking the bay, the apartment benefits from sweeping sea views, abundant natural light, and a strong architectural framework. Commissioned by an international professional couple as a second residence, the brief called for a home that could function equally as a private sanctuary and a welcoming setting for entertaining. Byrne’s response was deliberate and measured, allowing the building’s original character to lead.

The renovation began with a careful restoration of the apartment’s historic fabric. Decorative plasterwork and classical mouldings were preserved and subtly enhanced, framing the interiors rather than competing with them. Rather than introducing contrast for its own sake, the design layers contemporary elements with restraint, creating a calm, timeless dialogue between old and new.
Today, the main living space is arranged to maximize both light and flow. Tall French windows draw the eye toward the Mediterranean, while a neutral palette of warm creams and pale greys provides a composed backdrop. Contemporary furnishings are sculptural yet comfortable, scaled to respect the room’s proportions. Soft curves, tactile fabrics, and thoughtful spacing lend the space an inviting, lived-in quality that feels effortless rather than styled.
An open-plan kitchen anchors the apartment as both a functional workspace and a social focal point. A marble-topped island reflects the changing light throughout the day, while clean-lined cabinetry maintains visual clarity. From morning coffee to evening gatherings, the kitchen operates as an extension of the living space, reinforcing the home’s relaxed rhythm and sense of ease.

Texture plays a central role throughout. Natural oak flooring introduces warmth and continuity, while bespoke textiles, from tailored upholstery to layered window treatments, add softness and depth. Brass detailing and select vintage accents, sourced locally, bring a quiet sense of craftsmanship and regional character, grounding the apartment firmly in its French context.
The bedroom suite is conceived as a private retreat within the home. The palette softens further here, encouraging rest and retreat. A custom upholstered headboard spans the width of the room, creating a focal point that is both elegant and understated. A Juliet balcony allows fresh sea air and daylight to filter in, reinforcing the constant dialogue between interior and exterior that defines life on the Riviera.
Throughout the apartment, the design reflects an intuitive understanding of how the space will be used. This is not a showpiece residence, but a considered home designed for comfort, discretion, and longevity. Every decision, from material selection to lighting placement, supports a sense of quiet luxury rather than overt opulence.
In Pied-à-Terre Cannes, Byrne achieves a nuanced balance between heritage and modernity. The project honors its historic setting while delivering a contemporary living environment that feels calm, assured, and enduring, a coastal refuge shaped by light, proportion, and thoughtful restraint.
