DESIGN THAT

A sculptural wall lamp by Franck Genser turns the familiar form of a basketball hoop into an unexpected moment of light, where playfulness and design meet in perfect balance.

French designer Franck Genser has a way of turning familiar objects into something quietly unexpected. In Basketball, a sculptural wall lamp, he takes the simple form of a basketball hoop and reimagines it as a refined lighting piece that feels both playful and elegant.

The design is deceptively simple. A black metal ring extends from the wall while a delicate chain net cradles a softly glowing globe of light. The sphere appears suspended in the net, as if frozen in the moment before it drops through the hoop. The contrast between the industrial chain and the warm glow of the light creates a balance between structure and softness that feels almost poetic.

Recently presented at Alcova Miami, the lamp was shown within a curated setting that highlighted its sculptural quality. It works just as naturally in a living space or corridor as it does in a hospitality setting where design pieces are meant to spark conversation.

Genser founded his Paris studio in 2015 and approaches design with an unusual blend of engineering precision and artistic sensitivity. Working alongside artisans and engineers, he creates objects that combine function with emotion, often using materials such as walnut, marble, parchment, and lacquer that develop character over time.

The piece ultimately reminds us that good design does more than illuminate a room, it captures a moment of imagination and invites people to pause, smile, and look again.
