It wasn’t until six years after semi-tired New York natives decided to move to Arizona; they decided to build their dream home.  Their vast knowledge of the Valley was considerably useful in their search for the ideal building site.  Eventually, they discovered the ideal one-acre lot at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac lined with luxury estates.  The plot is minutes away from the historic Royal Palms Resort & Spa, the best country and golf clubs, fine dining, and upscale shopping. “Equally impressive is the lot’s triangular shape the delivers both majestic Southside views of Camelback Mountain and a sense of privacy,” explains Listing Broker, Frank Aazami of Russ Lyon Sotheby’s Private Client Group. The decision was clear, and it is here that the New York transplants built the aptly named estate “Hacienda del Sueño” or “Dream Home.”

Working closely with the couple, a stellar team designed the 7,248-square-foot luxury Modern Hacienda.  The design brief was to create a place where they could host lavish gatherings, while still being comfortable enough for when their children and grandchildren visit on the holidays.  Phoenixbased firm Drewett + Brenden Architects laid out the vision.  Premier residential home builder Scottsdales’s La Casa Builders brought it to life.  Polishing the cohesive interiors was Phoenix interior designer, Kim Alonzo, ASID, which for her work received the 2010 ASID Design Excellence Award in the over 6,000 sqft residential category.

The one-level custom home has three en-suite bedrooms, guest bath, and an additional one bed, one bath, semi-attached casita.  The flow and open floor plan of the traditional gathering spaces from the kitchen to the dining room to the great room and beyond, all facilitate seamless transitions between indoor-outdoor areas.  According to the owners, parties start with appetizers at the entry courtyard then continue to main courses at the large kitchen island.  Finally, dessert is served on the adjacent outdoor patio, where guests can swim or relax and enjoy the picture-perfect views.  “I love the outdoor covered patio: most of the year we can entertain our friends and families here,” the Mrs. of the house explains. “My husband can barbecue, and there can be friends around him, so he doesn’t feel so lonely while he’s cooking.  Likewise, others surround me in the kitchen.  It’s one big room, which is exactly what we wanted to accomplish.”

Each room and each space is a visual treat.  Starting with the hand-carved distressed-alder floral themed front door to the phenomenal stone feature wall in the foyer to reclaimed Douglas fir beams and corbels and ornamental iron sconces that adorn the main corridor.  Throughout traditional elements, including flagstone and granite walls, blend with contemporary fixtures and today’s technology, such as the rare retractable electronic wall system built on a radius between the great room and the outside patio.

The home’s unique location, thoughtful interiors, desert-embracing architecture, resort-style backyard complete with negative edge pool and multiple waterfalls embraces the exceptional attributes of contemporary Southwestern living.  Add in the stunning views, abundant sunshine and enviable indoor-outdoor life, this home is a hot commodity.
