Danielle Carignan Reclaimed Wood Sculpture

It began with a simple, almost melancholy observation. After the holidays, discarded Christmas trees lined the streets of Montreal, stripped of meaning and headed for disposal. Rather than add hers to the pile, Danielle Carignan chose to keep it. That decision became the starting point for a body of work rooted in reverence for material and transformation.

Carignan’s sculptural pieces are woven from dead and fallen branches, rescued trunks, and reclaimed wood. Each work responds to the natural character of the material itself. Branches curve, overlap, and interlock, echoing birds’ nests and the quiet geometries found in nature. The results feel intimate and elegant, objects that invite close attention rather than command it.

Light plays an essential role in her work. As the day shifts, shadows move across walls and floors, creating a secondary composition that feels alive and ever-changing. For some viewers, the pieces are calming. For others, they evoke a deeper respect for the raw materials that shape our built environment.

Carignan’s practice continues to evolve toward large-scale installations, including murals and suspended works designed for contemporary spaces. These ambitious pieces introduce natural forms into grand architectural settings, where organic structures and modern materials coexist. It is a dialogue between wilderness and design, one that mirrors a growing appreciation for craftsmanship grounded in nature.

In Carignan’s hands, wood is not simply a medium. It is memory, structure, and possibility, shaped with care into forms that honor where they came from while suggesting where they might belong next.
